Ariel, an LGTBI+ community activist and teacher, was murdered on August 1, 2019, at his home in Barranquilla, Atlántico. Ariel worked as a language teacher at San Antonio de Padua High School in Barranquilla. He was an active member of Caribe Afirmativo, an organization dedicated to the defense and awareness of LGBTI+ rights. Ariel organized and facilitated several workshops focused on human rights in general, as well as the defense and guarantees of the rights of activists. He also helped coordinate other programs developed in the 2016 peace accord that are dedicated to strengthening and protecting LGBTI + rights. According to Caribe Affirmativo, Atlántico is the third region with the highest levels of homophobic violence in Colombia, after Antioquia and Arauca.
